When Romilly met Philip
Submitted by debritz on October 24, 2008 - 20:54.| This may be an oldie - it happened last year and has just been repeated on UK television - but it's still a goodie. The Have I Got News For You clip, at right, records an encounter between TV reporter Romilly Weeks and Prince Philip in Malta, where the Prince and the Queen spent part of their anniversary. |
Official: Palin a winner
Submitted by debritz on October 20, 2008 - 09:36.Sarah Palin. Her appearance on Saturday Night Live scored the show's best ratings in years. Of course, as politicians always say, the only vote that matters comes in November.
Blackadder's cunning plan
Submitted by debritz on October 14, 2008 - 00:02.| Forget the lone gunman theory, the real assassins of JFK were Blackadder and Baldrick. That's according to Richard Curtis, who revealed that he an co-writer Ben Elton wanted to make a fifth series of the comedy, this time set in the 1960s. In the end, they couldn't get the cast together. | ![]() |
Old comics never die ...

... they just get the same "tribute" treatment as pop bands such as Abba (think Bjorn Again and Abbamania), The Beatles, Pink Floyd and The Jam (where the leading tribute act actually includes two-thirds of the original band, but not lead singer-songwriter Paul Weller). As I'm in Glasgow, I've tracked down two Billy Connolly tribute acts here and here. Of course, there are many multi-character impressionists such as Rory Bremner, Mike Yarwood, Jon Culshaw (the guy who played the Tom Baker Doctor Who on Dead Ringers) and Alistair McGowan, but doesn't it seem a little odd to make a living trying to be one other person? PS: Looking to book a tribute band. This website lists global gigs for acts ranging from early AC/DC imitators Bon/Fire (geddit?) to those evoking the sounds of Van Halen, U2, the Rolling Stones, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Led Zepplin, the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, Status Quo ... and, of course, Elvis. |
We'll always have Paris
Submitted by debritz on October 9, 2008 - 04:54.| Who says Paris Hilton doesn't have a sense of humour? She's continuing her fake presidential campaign via this interview with West Wing star Martin Sheen, who demonstrates that he's a very good sport. Vote for Paris? America, and the world, could do worse. In fact, they already have ... |

Wak's final attack
Submitted by debritz on October 7, 2008 - 00:31.
They were the biggest thing in entertainment in Brisbane in the 1980s, and they've been back together and on the road for the past year or two. But soon music-and-comedy act Wickety Wak really will be calling it quits; and their official website has the group's final tour dates. However, according to their fan club, the band's members won't have much physical evidence to fuel their nostalgia in their dotage. Apparently, somebody at Channel 7 has thrown out all the film and tape of the band - which made several specials and fronted a "Love You Brisbane" campaign for the station. Wait, it gets worse. I'm told that just about everything Channel 7 Brisbane ever produced from 1959 to 1994 got trashed. While TV may have been regarded as an ephemeral medium in its early years, it's hard to imagine that this decision was made in the enlightened 1990s. I'd have thought that somebody would have realised the worth of the material that was tossed into the skip.
The next Big Yin?
Submitted by debritz on October 5, 2008 - 01:54.| Is this man the next Billy Connolly? Scott Agnew has just been named the funniest man in Scotland after a competition which had its grand final at Glasgow's Old Fruit Market. Apparently his prize includes tour dates in Australia. I wonder what Aussie audiences will make of him ... Warning: Video includes language some people may find offensive. |

I'm so envious of Stephen Colbert. Not only does he host his own popular television show, but he's appearing alongside Spider-Man in a Marvel comic. There's more here. |
Death defying TV

"...while the sexual activity depicted is considered to be discreetly implied by the animated depiction, necrophilia, even by way of an animated reference, contains an inherent impact higher than mild." That's part of the verdict of the Australian Communications and Media Authority's verdict about an episode of Family Guy which was shown on Foxtel last year with a PG rating when it should have carried an M rating (i.e. suitable only for children over 15). Now I'm not saying that the depiction of Death having sex with a corpse is quality TV or suitable for little kids, but I wonder, in the grand scheme of things, what difference the ratings system makes with television programs. How many parents are going to look at the rating of each show and decide whether their child can watch it? Probably none. |
