End of the Regent?

Premier Anna Bligh has hatched a deal with developers Multiplex to incorporate a new Queensland Film and Television Centre in the redevelopment of Brisbane's historic Regent Theatre. The statement is at the Save the Regent website (which I run). As I see it, the deal takes away much more than it gives. The developer gets to build a huge tower block which will gut the historic building, while the Queensland public gets one 300-seat cinema and two 60-seat venues, which are pretty much useless.

Brett, I agree with you. It is taking away a lot more than it needs to. I honestly believe that regardless if the tower is built or not, nothing less than a proper theatre (like the Capital in Sydney) can suffice. Why? QPAC is shutting down the Lyric Theatre for a major refurbishment and there is no theatre in Brisbane that could handle the schedule or people...

The 2 60 seat venues should

The 2 60 seat venues should come in very handy when Delta Goodrem,The Veronicas or the Minougues next decide to grace us with 45 minutes of synchronised miming.

Is there a shortage of

Is there a shortage of cinemas? There is certainly a shortage of historical buildings, and a shortage of theatre venues of a size and configuration to sustain commercial or large-scale productions. I would love to see a list of the shows that tour nationally but avoid Brisbane; even when they play elsewhere in Queensland.

A very good point, John.

A very good point, John. They aren't making old buildings any more, but there are plenty of office towers - and other places to build them. Brisbane has a shameful record when it comes to protecting its heritage, and Anna Bligh can now proudly place herself up beside Joh Bjelke-Petersen as the great destroyer of our cultural and architectural history.
