Farewell, Michael Pate

Australian screen star Michael Pate, who also had a healthy career playing bad guys in Hollywood, has died at the age of 88. He was also a distinguished writer and producer and, in my experience of meeting him at an early Brisbane International Film Festival event, a gentleman. More here.

Why is it that when an older

Why is it that when an older actor/writer/director passes away,we usually always hear that he was a gentleman ? When a younger such person leaves this earth we are usually bombarded with quotes from publicists and managers telling us how intense, driven and what troubled genius's they no doubt were.Does stardom come too easily, too quickly for todays starlets ? It seems a 6 month stint in Neighbours or Home and Away is all thats required before they're off to conquer Hollywood or Broadway.

I can remember meeting

I can remember meeting one veteran actor - a Brit who had a major hit a long time earlier - and he was anything but a gentleman. However, in general, I think you are right. The people who got to the top of the game in the past usually got there on talent. While the "casting couch" was a reality in Hollywood from the earliest days, those who made on sex appeal, sexual favours or a certain "look" were, I think, in the minority until quite recently.
