Son shines

Congratulations to Queensland Premier Anna Bligh's son, Joe, who has won a spot to study in Mumbai, home of Bollywood, as part of his film and television degree. Of course, with the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and other initiatives, the state government has been very supportive of cinema - and that's a good thing. I just wish Ms Bligh could find some money in the coffers, and/or some steely political will, to help save and restore the historic Regent Theatre as a state-of-the-art live performance venue.

How did Anna Bligh set this

How did Anna Bligh set this one up ? Her influence stretches to Mumbai ? Of course it does ! She was recently offering up some nice incentives to Bollywood film makers to come over to Queensland to shoot off a few reels of film.

...

Just goes to show that she does have pull and if she really wanted to save The Regent, it would have been done by now !

Sorry Brad, a had to edit

Sorry Brad, a had to edit your comment a little. I can't say I agree that Anna Bligh "set up" her son's study trip to Mumbai. It's not unusual that mother and son would be interested in the same sorts of things, and I have no reason to doubt that he's going on the strengths of his own merits. Still, I do wish he was doing a performing arts degree at QUT instead of a filmmaking course! As for the second point, you are absolutely right. The state government could save the Regent - just as it ploughed money into Suncorp Stadium when it could have handed it over to developers, and into the Gabba. I'll be writing more about that soon.
